John,
February 1st marked the start of Black History Month, and 65 years since the Greensboro Four began their sit-ins at the Woolworth’s counter.
As we celebrate this rich history, this month also invites us to reflect on the work still ahead of us to achieve racial justice and true equity in our nation.
I grew up during segregation in North Carolina, John. When we went to the grocery store, we were taught not to look directly at a white person. I remember not being able to eat at the lunch counter at Big John’s, and going to the backdoor of Leo’s restaurant to pick up BBQ sandwiches — because we weren’t allowed in the dining room.
Segregation was not officially outlawed until 1964, when I was in grade school. I wouldn’t attend a desegregated school until I was 13. The progress we have made in just my lifetime is astounding.
But there is still SO much more to be done.
So as we celebrate Black History month, I hope you will take some time to reflect on how much change can be made in a generation, and how much more can be made in the next.
Onward,
Valerie Foushee
