The GOP is at it again, pushing another massive tax scam that would force working families to pay more while the ultra-wealthy get off scot-free. Instead of making billionaires and corporations pay their fair share of income taxes, Trump is openly floating a scheme to abolish the income tax altogether.[1]

One of the first bills House Republicans introduced this year would eliminate the federal income tax and replace it with a staggering 30% national sales tax.[2] That means you’ll pay more for everything you buy, while the richest Americans, who benefit the most from income-tax cuts and spend relatively little of their huge incomes, get another free ride.

This is a tax hike on middle- and working-class Americans, all to let the wealthiest people in the country pay next to nothing. This is the same disastrous "Fair Tax" plan Republicans have been trying to push for decades, and if they get their way, it will mean huge tax hikes for tens of millions of families.

We’ve seen before how these Republican tax scams play out. Trump’s 2017 tax cuts overwhelmingly benefited the rich and corporations while adding nearly $2 trillion to the national debt―debt the GOP uses as an excuse to try to cut vital public services like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Now, they want to double down by eliminating income taxes altogether. If they succeed, it will be one of the biggest upward transfers of wealth in U.S. history. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) has warned that these plans would increase taxes on a multitude of essential goods and services that working people rely on.[3]

While billionaires hoard their wealth, everyday Americans would struggle just to afford the basics.

We can’t let Trump and House Republicans get away with this. They’re hoping voters won’t notice this latest tax scam until it’s too late. But we’re fighting back with research, grassroots mobilization, and pressure on lawmakers to reject this catastrophic plan.
