Production Tax Credit, Broadband Bills Pass Committee
|
Last week, two bills I authored passed out of committee and are now progressing further in the legislative process.
Senate Bill 306 would make the film and media production tax
credit transferrable across Indiana. After speaking with students and faculty at Huntington University, I was inspired to author this bill so that Huntington and other colleges and universities with film and media schools can have an easier time showcasing their productions all across the state without the trouble of certain barriers holding them back.
Senate Bill 502 builds upon
the years of work I have put toward expanding access to broadband in rural communities across Indiana. SB 502 deals with utility pole attachments and would help to ensure that process operates more seamlessly between our electric utilities and the broadband providers.
SB 306 and SB 502 are now being considered by the full Senate. To learn more about these bills or others I'm working on this session, click here. |

Indiana Reading Scores Improve
|
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Hoosier teachers, Indiana saw an impressive improvement in reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
Our state's scores improved from 19th to 6th in the nation among fourth graders and from 17th to 6th among eighth graders.
This improvement is due in large part to our state's teachers who are working hard to help our students get back on track. I would also like to thank Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana's Secretary of Education, for her leadership in this effort.
In addition to funding increases for programs that promote literacy, in recent years, Senate Republicans have supported legislation that required schools to align curriculum to the Science of Reading and required teacher preparation programs to train new teachers in the Science
of Reading.
As we all know, the ability to read is foundational to academic success, and I am very pleased to see our students are making strong improvements.
