John xxxxxx,
Police violence against Black people existed long before it was captured on cellphone cameras and shared online for the world to see. If you’re Black in America, you’re statistically more likely to be stopped, searched, and even killed by law enforcement. Today, we're mourning George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. Just a short time ago, we mourned Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, and Michael Brown. This list that was already far too long, continues to grow, and it must stop. Justice can’t wait. With these facts in mind, the world is watching as officers rammed their SUVs into crowds and pushed protestors to the ground, while a president threatened martial law. Accountability is critical. Our police officers commit to protect and serve, and when they intentionally turn from that duty and unjustly take the lives of Black men and women — accountability is necessary. That’s why I stand with Hakeem in calling for the accountability owed to our communities and our nation. Join the growing number of Americans calling for police reform by adding your name as a citizen co-sponsor of Hakeem's bill, the Eric Garner Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act.
