Biden’s Parting Gifts to Medicare Beneficiaries
On January 17, CMS announced the next 15 Part D covered drugs ([link removed] ) selected under the Inflation Reduction Act’s drug price negotiation program.
With recent hindsight, it is not surprising the Biden-Harris Administration pushed to release this information ahead of President Trump’s inauguration date.
Repealing parts of the Inflation Reduction Act is one of the few Medicare-focused provisions of Project 2025 and a stated goal of some Republican members.
This includes drug price negotiation. By releasing this list, the Biden administration has a chance to name those products that may or may not ultimately have negotiated prices in place in 2026 and 2027.
Which Drugs Made the List?
Surprising no one, the list includes Ozempic/Wegovy/Rybelsus – the blockbuster diabetes and weight loss drugs.
That these weight-related drugs hit the top spot ([link removed] ) for gross spending in Medicare Part D ($14 billion gross spending between November 2023 and October 2024, not accounting for rebates) is pretty remarkable.
