John, it’s Senator Dick Durbin.

February is Black History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the incredible contributions Black Americans have made to our nation.

From brave anti-slavery activists like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass to civil rights leaders like my late friend and colleague John Lewis to modern barrier breakers like former President Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson , there are countless Black Americans whose tireless work for equality deserve to be commemorated during Black History Month – and beyond.

This is also an opportunity for us to recognize as a nation that, although we have made incredible strides towards racial justice, there is still progress that needs to be made to ensure fair and equal opportunities for all Americans. In the criminal justice system, in our elections, and in too many other areas, discrimination is still an ongoing issue. That’s why I have advocated for legislation like the Justice in Policing Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act – bills that would help reduce racial disparities and bring about a more equitable America.

This Black History Month, I hope you will celebrate what Black Americans have done for the United States and commit yourself to continuing the fight for racial justice all throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Senator Durbin
