Indiana Governor Mike Braun Stopped By Terre Haute To Talk Property Tax Reform

It is no secret that property taxes are a top issue for Hoosier voters. Since
2021, property taxes in Indiana have skyrocketed alongside inflation.



During his campaign, Governor Braun promised aggressive property tax reform,
and he is already working on legislation to ease the burden on Hoosier
homeowners.



Governor Braun says that his administration is committed to public safety, and
his administration will be working to ease the burden on communities like Terre
Haute that are in a "less favorable" economic position. However, Braun also
says that it will be the city's responsibility to trim excess fat.



"I want to keep control local. Figure it out, come to the state if you have a
really good reason you need help. And I am going to be looking at the places
that need it most, and cut the places that seem to be in good shape already"
says Braun when asked about making up lost revenue.



Another key part of this proposed legislation includes a transparency portal,
that will keep homeowners, businesses, and local governments up to speed on all
property tax related changes.



News Ten asked Governor Braun why transparency is so vital when dealing with a
legislative overhaul of this magnitude. Braun says that transparency is
important...not just for residents, but for those local governments that will
be impacted by the reform.



"I'm talking about a cut or setback for the most culpable, cap it going
forward at a robust rate of economic growth, and the flood the whole system
with transparency. And when I describe it like that, I don't even have schools
or local governments against me" says Braun.



This bill is still in the early stages at the Indiana Statehouse, and could
still be changed before it becomes law.
