Hey everybody — it's Mark Kelly.

Elon Musk’s underlings are targeting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Current and former NOAA officials have been told to expect a 50% reduction in staff and a 30% reduction in funding.

Again, and I can’t emphasize this enough: Elon Musk has no authority to dictate or impose these cuts. Congress authorizes and appropriates NOAA’s funding, and neither President Trump or Elon Musk have the authority to cut it unilaterally.

But beyond that, I’m a pilot and someone who sailed on a merchant ship across the oceans. Gutting NOAA is absolutely nuts. Every pilot, every airline, every shipping company in the country depends on the weather forecasting data NOAA provides through the National Weather Service with their sensors and satellites. Every American, from Hawaii to Maine, needs that data to prepare for adverse weather conditions like hurricanes and tornadoes. Farmers need it to raise their crops. Ship captains need it to chart their courses.

The dollars Musk and the Trump Administration might save pale in comparison to the collateral damage we would incur by gutting this agency.

I am going to use every lever of power at my disposal as a United States Senator to defend NOAA from Elon Musk and the White House as they try to slash our country’s vital infrastructure to the bone.

But I can’t do it without you.

I’m asking you to chip in $3 and help me counter what the Trump Administration and Elon Musk are trying to do. We’ve got to stand against them.
