The investigation led to a facility in Gardena where 24 chassis believed stolen were recovered, police said. NBC 4 LA District Attorney, lawmakers announce effort to stop looting during disasters Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, LA County Sheriff Robert Luna and lawmakers are expected to announce legislation Monday they are proposing to toughen laws against looting and impersonating emergency workers during disasters and the recovery process. The proposed legislation is scheduled to be announced Monday morning at the Hall of Justice. The legislation was motivated by the devastating January wildfires with more than two dozen arrests of people accused of looting in fire zones, with some allegedly impersonating firefighters to avoid law enforcement. “For those who commit crimes from looting to arson to impersonation of firefighters to price gouging to financial scams, justice will be swift and significant,” Hochman said when announcing charges last month. “You will be arrested, prosecuted, and punished to the full extent of the law. Targeting victims of these fires at their lowest moment is despicable and shameful, and this office will do everything in its power to support the victims and bring their victimizers to justice.” NBC 4 Southern California business owner defrauded millions from clients A Southern California man pleaded guilty to defrauding over $5 million from clients and evading more than $1 million in taxes. From 2007 to 2019, Noah’s company was a customs import broker for Daiso, a Japan-based discount chain with locations throughout the U.S. During that time, prosecutors said Noah provided Daiso with false customs duty forms and invoices to collect false reimbursement for duty fees. The forms he provided to Daiso were different from the ones provided to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Through this method, Daiso had overpaid Noah nearly $3.4 million, prosecutors said. KTLA 5 USPS warns public about romance scams ahead of Valentine's Day Ahead of what is known as one of the most romantic days of the year, the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are warning the public to be vigilant over romance scams—deceptive schemes that prey on emotions to steal money. Romance scammers typically create fake identities using stolen photos and fabricated personal details to establish online relationships. These fraudsters often profess love early on, investing weeks or even months to build trust with their victims. Once a bond is formed, they begin requesting money through cash transfers, checks, gift cards, or wire payments—sometimes even asking for valuables to be sent by mail. Victims are left heartbroken and financially devastated. “Protecting the sanctity and integrity of the mail is our top priority,” said USPIS Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale. “This includes protecting customers from mail-related crimes, including fraudulent schemes like romance scams. Public awareness is critical in stopping these criminals before they cause harm.” NBC 4 Georgia officer fatally shot, suspect arrested after shooting at shopping complex The Roswell Police Department lost one of their own Friday evening.
