Dear Neighbor,
Last week, legislative leaders announced that we reached an agreement to move forward with organizing the Minnesota House of Representatives. DFLers secured a power-sharing agreement that honors and protects the will of the voters both in Shakopee and statewide. This agreement is what Democrats have been seeking all along.
Representative Brad Tabke will be seated, election contests will go to the Ethics Committee, and any vote to declare a vacancy will need to be bipartisan. Brad Tabke won on Election Night, he won in a recount, and he won in court — this agreement upholds the will of the voters expressed in a free and fair election.
Once we are tied, we will have co-chairs and an equal number of Democrats and Republicans on all but one of the committees.
Given the situation we faced, with Republicans engaging in an illegitimate power grab, Democrats made the difficult decision to deny quorum to protect the will of the voters. And we succeeded.
That it took nearly four weeks to reach this agreement is regrettable and was unnecessary. This agreement is essentially the same as the last offer that I made to Republicans before session started, including conceding the speakership. We could have avoided all of this, honored the will of the voters, and started in a bipartisan, collaborative fashion from day one.
For anything to get done this session, we have to work together. The 2024 election made clear that Minnesota is a closely-divided state, but it also gave us the chance to show that bipartisan governing can work. I remain optimistic that we can turn the page on the contentious past few weeks and rise to the challenge and deliver effective bipartisan governance for Minnesotans.
Democrats will continue working alongside Minnesotans to build a future where everyone can get ahead, not just the rich and powerful. We will continue to stand up for Minnesotans’ rights and freedoms, and we will do all we can to protect them from the chaos, cruelty, and incompetence coming out of the Trump Administration.
