John,

Christopher Luxon is refusing to take responsibility for how destabilising his cuts to health have been.

Every day we hear from people who are finding it harder to get doctor’s appointments, surgeries and urgent care. This is because National has chosen to underfund GP clinics, made it harder for hospitals to hire staff, and cut hundreds of health jobs.

We've been meeting hospital workers – nurses supporting communities with immunisation, family violence, mental health and suicide prevention programmes. They are feeling devastated by Luxon’s cuts and lack of investment in the work they do.

A woman I met had been a nurse for almost 40 years and said she has “never felt so distressed at the state of the health system”.

National talked a big game during their election campaign, promising both tax cuts and improved health services. But Luxon has failed to deliver.

It doesn't have to be this way. New Zealanders deserve a reliable public health care system where everyone has access to the care they need, when they need it.

As a doctor, I know how important it is that prevention comes first, and care is delivered closer to home. This is why health will be a key priority for Labour as we head into 2026 and are focused on what matters most to New Zealanders: Jobs, health and homes.

In the meantime, Luxon must stop the cuts that are putting patients at risk and taking our health system backwards.
