Dear John,
In the coming week, the Senate will consider whether President Trump’s nominee Linda McMahon is fit to serve as Secretary of Education.
I won’t sugarcoat this: McMahon is completely unqualified and supports dangerous policies that jeopardize young people’s access to a safe, inclusive education.
Some of the most disturbing things about Linda McMahon’s record:
-
McMahon lied about her credentials, falsely claiming she had an education degree from East Carolina University, demonstrating a troubling lack of integrity and qualifications.
-
She has actively supported efforts to defund public schools, restrict curriculum discussing systemic racism, and push for policies that would harm LGBTQI+ students – especially transgender and nonbinary youth.
-
According to a federal lawsuit, when McMahon and her husband led World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), they failed to take action after learning of well-known allegations that a WWE employee was engaging in systemic sexual abuse of children.
If you’re as disturbed by McMahon’s track record as I am, join me in sending a letter to your Senators here, urging them to VOTE NO on McMahon’s nomination. Student survivors, LGBTQI+ students, and youth across the country deserve a Secretary of Education that takes responsibility for keeping them safe.
The leader of the U.S. Department of Education must prioritize and protect students’ civil rights – not seek to undermine them. Young peoples’ rights are on the line, and we’re depending on you to take action today.
In solidarity,
