Since the new administration took office on January 20, Waterkeeper Alliance has been working to interpret and respond to a range of executive orders issued by the White House, as well as addressing changes brought by new leadership in Washington.
We responded to the confirmation of former Congressman Lee Zeldin as the new Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, urging him to resist industry influence and prioritize clean water and public health. In line with these priorities, we also issued a statement opposing Congressional Review Act resolutions aimed at repealing the commonsense Waste Emissions Charge under the Methane Emissions Reduction Program.
Additionally, we initiated a Dive Into Democracy campaign, advocating for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to officially list the Eastern Hellbender salamander— an important clean water sentinel — as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The deadline is today, February 11 — there’s still time to write to the FWS now and urge them to finalize ESA protection to give these ancient salamanders the lifeline they need to survive!
Through these efforts and others, Waterkeeper Alliance continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to clean, accessible water. With a global network of more than 300 Waterkeeper groups, we are grounded in sound science and the belief that clean water is a fundamental right for all people. Moving forward, we will maintain and support an effective opposition strategy against attacks on clean water, environmental protections, and policies—both in the United States and around the world.
