Dear John,

The data doesn’t lie.

Our report definitively demonstrates that any changes in our trade with Europe during a COVID recession would have a severe economic impact.

The hard part is done - now we need to get this information out into the world, as quickly as possible.

Tens of thousands of you have used our HeyMP tool to send our report to your MP, and we’re already getting responses back.

But if you feel like your MP ignores your emails, or you just want to highlight the issue in your community, sending a letter into your local paper is unbeatable.

Use our simple letter template below.

Many MPs read their local paper to get a sense of their constituent’s opinions, so sending in a letter is a great way of getting their attention. It will show them why their constituents want the transition period extended, and the economic arguments behind it.

All you need to do is copy and paste our template letter, which you will find at the bottom of this email, and send it to your local paper by email. The email address you need will be printed on the letters page of your paper and should also be available on their website.

Would you write to your local newspaper and highlight this report? Complete our survey and let us know if you can help.

This is a brilliant way of spreading the word about extending transition. Many don’t realise we have just weeks left to secure an extension, and don’t realise what’s at stake if we let that deadline drift by. Millions of people read local newspapers, and the ‘letters to the editor’ section is often the most read after the front page.

We launched a ‘send a letter’ campaign last month, and thanks to our supporters, it was a huge success. As the 30 June deadline approaches, we need your help now more than ever.

So please, copy and paste our template letter at the bottom of this email, and send it on. You might not even have to have your name and address published – check your local paper for more information.

We’ve done our part - we’ve gathered the data and made an ironclad case for extending transition. Now comes your part. Send this letter today.

Best wishes,

Cary Mitchell,
Head of Campaigns, Best for Britain

P.S. Please find below our template letter to the editor. Simply copy it and paste it into an email to your local paper - the address you need will be on their website. After you send the letter, and if you haven’t had the chance yet, please make sure you’ve sent our report to your MP. You can do so here. <[link removed]>

To the Editor,

I’ve just seen a new report (from Best for Britain and the Social Market Foundation) on the double impact of Brexit and Coronavirus, and feel like I’ve spotted an iceberg on the horizon that everyone else is ignoring.

The report shows that any change to our trade relationship with Europe during the Covid-19 recession will hurt the UK economy. The North West and the Midlands regions of the UK would face a disproportionately severe impact should we leave the Brexit transition period without any kind of deal.

Brexit is done and we cannot stop it, but we can protect our jobs, our services and our local businesses. However, our communities are already stretched to breaking point by the coronavirus pandemic and we desperately need time to deal with that before we can turn our focus to our changing relationship with the EU.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name and address]
