These are not normal times. We are already seeing unchecked corruption, cruelty, and chaos from the Trump administration.
I want to be absolutely clear: their actions are lawless and unconstitutional.
But that is the point. They are attempting to overwhelm us so we disengage. But we will not fatigue or go home. You, like me, believe in our democracy, and I still believe we will prevail.
The executive branch does not have endless power — our Founders made sure of that, it was the basis of our independence. No matter how hard the Trump Administration overreaches, they do not hold the power of the purse (and that includes the agencies and programs funded by our tax dollars) — Congress does.
Our Democratic minority power is limited, but it is still power, and we will use every bit of it to hold the line. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I will continue to keep a close eye on the federal funds that are in danger of being stolen. This is why the judicial and legislative branches of government exist in our system of checks and balances, and I take my responsibility for that very seriously.
The moment we see an unconstitutional action, I will be vocal and transparent about what is happening and how we can come together to block it.
While I take care of things in Congress, I have charged my team with not losing sight of the next election. Along with defending my own district, we have vulnerable, recently flipped red seats we can flip back to blue. If we do that, our minority power will become a majority power, and that changes everything.
