Hi John,
Every February, we take time to honor and celebrate the profound impact Black Americans have had in shaping our nation. This year's Black History Month theme, "African Americans and Labor," is a powerful reminder of the resilience, brilliance, and contributions of Black workers—especially here in Connecticut, where Black labor leaders have driven progress and defined our state’s identity.
The story of Black labor is one of perseverance, innovation, and impact—from the forced labor of enslaved Africans to the economic powerhouses like Black Wall Street. African Americans have been the backbone of American progress, too often without receiving the recognition they deserve.
Here in Connecticut, we’re honoring leaders like William Lanson, a free Black entrepreneur in the early 19th century. Lanson played a critical role in expanding New Haven’s Long Wharf which was at the time the longest in the nation, and constructing sections of the Farmington Canal. His contributions helped establish New Haven as a major port and transportation hub.
Honoring the legacy of Black History means taking action for a stronger, more equitable future. That’s why Connecticut Democrats are committed to:
* Supporting Black entrepreneurs in turning dreams into thriving businesses
* Fighting for worker rights that protect every employee, no matter their race, ethnicity, or background
* Electing and supporting Black candidates who fight for our values
This month is not just about reflecting on the past, it’s about continuing the fight. Together, we can ensure that Black voices are heard, Black workers are valued, and Black leaders are given opportunities to drive change.
Onward,
Adrienne Billings-Smith
