If you’re struggling to keep track of all the nastiness coming out of DC these first couple of weeks, we’re with you. But this news really needs your attention—especially if you care about consumer rights and don’t want Big Tech cronies calling the shots on tech regulations. Before you hear the bad news, here’s the good: we can fight back.

Trump and Elon Musk are attacking the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB),¹ an independent agency established to protect us from deceptive and abusive practices by financial companies. As more people use Apple Pay and CashApp like credit cards and see their data exploited and sold by Big Tech and data brokers, the CFPB has taken on responsibility for investigating tech companies’ shady practices, too.² Now, this agency is one of the first on the chopping block.

Without the CFPB, predatory practices thrive and our privacy and pockets suffer. Simply put, this is a loss we can’t afford. Will you take action to demand lawmakers throw everything they have into the fight to protect the CFPB?

Last week, Trump appointed Project 2025 author Russel Vought to “head” (read: dismantle) the CFPB. Then, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was given access to the Bureau’s data and internal systems.³ Now, all employees have been ordered to stay home and sit pretty,¹ while consumer protection rules go frozen or unenforced. Worst of all, these moves stall the agency’s recent progress toward holding Big Tech companies accountable for their data scraping.

This is just one slice of the fight against Trump and Musk’s hostile takeover of the agencies doing good work to protect us from predatory business practices. We know it gets overwhelming to fight on so many fronts, but we can’t ignore the important ones. Right now, that looks like fighting tooth and nail to keep the CFPB’s vital protections for consumers and Internet users.
