Dear John,

The Oregon League of Conservation Voters stands among those calling for racial justice and accountability in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless other people of color.

The environment and racial justice are interrelated. People of color and indigenous communities are less likely to have clean air and water, have endured greater suffering from the health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and also face daily threats of harassment and violence from law enforcement and systemic racism from our government. This systemic and pervasive racism makes people of color and indigenous communities fear for their families’ health, safety, and lives every day.

As an organization that envisions a world with clean air, clean water, public lands, and a safe climate for everyone – all protected by a just and equitable democracy – we understand we are all only as safe as those members of our community who are most at risk. Racial justice and environmental justice are inseparable.

Our commitment to fighting for a healthy environment for all people means that we must fight against systemic racism, and work as an anti-racist organization. We recognize that racism dehumanizes all of us, and we are committed to taking anti-racist action. We recognize the leadership of frontline organizations and individuals, and we stand among those calling for justice, accountability, and an end to violence. Team OLCV
