John,
Over the past week, we have all witnessed and perhaps participated in nationwide protests against police violence and systematic racism within our nation’s justice system. From George Floyd, to Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery we have seen more innocent Black lives cut short pointlessly.
It is our hope that you’re staying safe and taking care of yourself during this unprecedented time, especially as the content we are consuming can be triggering and traumatic to view. Not to mention we are still grappling with the ongoing effects of a global pandemic, which has turned our lives upside down.
We are truly at a crossroads in this nation and it may be leaving many of you asking what I can do in this moment. Here is what we know: long-term, sustainable, and systematic change happens when Americans demand progress through activism, and make their voices heard in elections.
Voting for leaders at every level of government is a foundational step to ensure that our justice systems reflect the values of the communities they serve. That is why it is critical that we use our power at the ballot box to accurately capture the great diversity of this country and that we vote down the ballot in every election. The next step in this process is to hold those officials accountable while they are in office.
In spite of those who work to suppress voter access and the systems in place that make voting in some states challenging, we are fighting alongside you day in and day out, for fair and safe access to the ballot box.
During this ever evolving time of unrest and uncertainty, When We All Vote remains committed to changing the culture around voting, working to close the race and age voting gap, and providing you with the resources that you will need to cast your ballot and organize your community to vote safely.
Over the coming days we will continue to share more critical information about the remaining primaries, how every vote cast not only matters but also impacts our daily lives and all of the ways you can plug in. If there is more you want to do right now, here are three ways you can act with us:
- Register to Vote: Check your status and make sure you are registered to vote.
- Organize: Squad Up and become a Voting Squad Captain and get trained on how to organize those closest to you or in your community.
- Mobilize: Take our safe voting pledge and get 5 friends to sign the pledge as well.
John, it is on each of us to continue to educate ourselves and those closest to us about the power of voting. This won’t be an easy road but if we work together, confront hard truths and play our part, I am confident that the promise that is America will be its practice.
