George Floyd did not deserve to die. He did not deserve to struggle and suffocate, to be ignored while he pleaded for help.

George Floyd deserves to be remembered.

In the wake of what has happened in the Twin Cities and across our country, I want us to focus on what the protests are calling for: a just society. We must listen to these calls and, as we rebuild, work to overcome the racial divides and disparities that have held us back for so long.

As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

We must acknowledge that these protests are not just about George Floyd. They are born out of deep frustration with a system which was built upon the backs of black people and which has failed them time and time again. It is long past time we commit ourselves to reform.

In the coming days and weeks, we must fight for accountability for George Floyd with the arrest and conviction of each of the four officers who took part in his killing. We must also fight for change in our culture. It’s unacceptable to live in a society that permits the death and devaluing of Black people, indigenous people, and all people of color.

Each of us has a responsibility to rebuild our nation into one that actively chooses to walk the walk of antiracism.
