Over the last few days, generations of pain have manifested in protests across the country. I’ve listened to the voices of Black Americans who have been harmed by centuries of injustice -- from slavery, to Jim Crow and segregation, to a criminal justice system that even today disproportionately harms and kills them. It has to stop. If you missed my email yesterday and want to hear more, please give it a read here. |
Team, I just wanted to say thank you. We set ourselves some really high internal goals this last month because we believe in this team, and we believe that the work we’re doing right now will be critical to winning Texas in November.
Every time we started to fall behind, this grassroots team stepped up to the plate and got us back on track, propelling this campaign into June and toward the nomination. We have a long way to go until November, so let’s keep up the momentum -- pitch in now to help set us up for a strong June.
Winning this election is such an important mission. We all have our reasons for being part of this team, but as we enter Pride month I want to talk about one that's very important to me, and make sure you know exactly where I stand:
-
I will do everything I can to lift up LGBTQ+ voices and fight for ALL Texans’ rights — especially LGBTQ+ people of color. So long as some of us are not equal, none of us are.
-
I strongly support legislation like the Equality Act to extend and secure critical civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ Americans.
-
We should immediately overturn the ban on transgender people serving in our military. When I was in combat, I didn’t care what the gender identity or sexual orientation of anyone standing beside me was -- all that mattered was that they had my back and I had theirs. I fought to open frontline jobs to women, so when our government turns around and denies those same jobs to transgender Americans, I take that as an affront. It’s all or none, and I’m in this fight for all of us. Will you join me?
-
We also need to enshrine protections for the LGBTQ+ community with laws banning so-called “conversion therapy.” This can do incredible harm to LGBTQ+ youth, and the fact that it’s still legal in Texas is unthinkable.
Look, it’s not just the Senate seat that’s at stake this election. It’s the Supreme Court, too. And we cannot afford to wait and see what more justices like Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh would do to all the progress we’ve made toward equal rights for all.
The work this team has done so far is incredible, but June is the last full month before the run-off, and we can’t slow down. In just over a month we’ll be facing Sen. Cornyn head-on. I know this team always comes through, so let’s hit the ground running and make sure we’re in the best possible position in the general election.
