I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. -- Gary Here we are just eight weeks into President Trump's second administration, and the activity level on one issue after another continues at a breakneck speed. It seems each day there’s a new press availability, executive order, fulfillment of another campaign promise, or the naming or confirmation of a stellar appointment to the administration. The speed with which the new administration is taking shape and jumping into action is breathtaking! D.C. Democrat heads have been sent into spin mode. Their scattershot efforts to find a message and a messenger that resonates with the public are a funny new parlor game. Historically low Democrat Party approval numbers tell the tale. One thing is crystal clear. Donald Trump used the Biden years, that dash (-) between Trump 45 and Trump 47, to excellent effect. With four years of experience in Washington under his belt, he used the last four years brilliantly, like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Lawfare at the federal, state, and local levels, smear campaigns, a mug shot, the ransacking of his home, two assassination attempts, and an extended trial where he had to be physically present . . . he took it all in stride and deftly turned each such effort to end his career or his life into a badge of honor that only cemented his voters’ support. Donald Trump returned to office with a knowledge of the ins and outs of Washington and its players, a keen understanding of the type of personnel needed to make government more effective and efficient, and a daily awareness that he has just under four years to do the job the American people elected him to do. His understanding of the hopes and dreams of Americans, his ability to talk like a “normie,” and his desire to use every lever at his disposal to get the job done is a sight to behold. Please allow me to share a personal story. Gary and I attended a White House Christmas party after the 2020 election. The White House was beautifully decorated, and, of course, the guests were dressed in holiday attire. But it was a most somber occasion marked by hushed voices, intense private conversations, grave concerns for the future of the country, and little holiday cheer. We remarked as we left that evening that we may have just experienced the last time we would ever be guests at the home of an American president. I have never forgotten the solemn weight of that night. Then, on Wednesday of this week, we were back at the White House for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration! Entering the White House grounds, we were serenaded by bagpipers as their lilting music wafted on a spring breeze. Once inside, we watched Irish dancers and heard Irish music being played by a military band on the main level. The light and celebratory atmosphere could not have provided a greater contrast to our last time in those very same rooms. The guests were a special mix of those who have given voice to conservative values for decades and a younger crowd who had made their mark on last year’s election success. Cabinet heads were sprinkled everywhere, and as the eye scanned the happy guests, there was a new realization of the remarkable team that had been assembled for Trump 2.0. Yes, there was a new sheriff in town, but he was one who had thick skin and battle scars, and he was now enjoying a second wind more clear-eyed and strategic than the first time around. Pray for President Trump, Vice President Vance, and their families. Ask God to give them the strength and vision to fulfill the mandate given them by the voters. Pray for their safety in these troubled times when opposing voices are more and more strident and seem to have an outsized influence. Give them times of respite and refreshment and the desire to draw closer to You for guidance and wisdom. Lift up in prayer the members of the cabinet and those serving as political appointees under them. These are the people charged with implementing the Trump agenda. Washington is a “company town” where most people in the city or adjoining suburbs work directly for the federal government, are government contractors or subcontractors, or are somehow connected to the ebb and flow of the city. This can make for an uncomfortable daily life for those charged with implementing President Trump’s policies. Pray for their personal safety, for them to stay strong in their desire to make a difference, and for their families who may feel the unwelcome winds in their neighborhood or schools. Finally, ask God to grant our country a period of calm and reflection when we can take stock and give the new administration a chance without shrill and destructive voices dominating the national conversation. May our Heavenly Father guide our conversations with one another in the days ahead.
