Dear friend,
You may have heard about the alarming and cruel arrest and detention of Columbia University Palestinian activist and green card holder, Mahmoud Khalil. This case raises serious concerns about the broader implications for free speech and due process for all of us, and unfortunately it’s been part of the anti-immigrant strategy for years.
As said in the Washington Post Editorial Board, the Trump Administration’s push to deport Khalil is not supported by any evidence from immigration officers to justify the decision. The editorial goes on to warn that Khalil’s case is a threat to First Amendment rights: “If the secretary of state can deport a legal resident simply because he dislikes his or her views, whose First Amendment rights are next?”
As America’s Voice legal advisor David Leopold explains, this is not just about Khalil — it’s about Trump’s broader plan to weaponize immigration enforcement to suppress dissent. Former ICE Director Tom Homan’s alarming statement that ICE will “absolutely” target other legal immigrants, including green card holders, makes it clear that this is just the beginning.
America’s Voice is fighting back against Trump’s dangerous escalations and his obvious attempts to limit the speech of Americans. We won’t back down, but we need your help to keep this work going. Together, we will fight back.
In solidarity,
Vanessa Cárdenas
