John,
In the face of relentless attacks on our communities, the American people are looking for leaders who will stand up to this lawless administration.
This month, during his joint address to Congress, Donald Trump stated that he had a mandate for his administration’s illegal actions. And one Democrat had the guts to stand up and call him out.
My colleague, Congressman Al Green spoke truth to power, interrupting Trump to make clear that Trump does not have a mandate to cut Medicaid. Images of Al Green holding up his cane spread quickly around the Internet, with people demanding more Democrats stand up to Trump like he did.
But 10 Democrats joined Republicans in voting to censure Al Green for disrupting Trump, and then Democratic House leadership reprimanded him because he wasn’t simply silent in his protest of Trump. This is not how we fight fascism! The American people need Democrats to be a real opposition party that blocks Trump and his billionaire cronies like Elon Musk from stealing from the people and dismantling our federal government. We are in a crisis, and more Democrats need to act like it.
In my first year in Congress in 2019, Al Green and I led on impeaching Trump. We fought back against Trump’s illegal actions and impeachment efforts succeeded, despite months of pushback from Democratic leadership who didn’t want to rock the boat—even though Democrats controlled the House of Representatives back then. Now that Trump is back in office, I’m proud to stand with Al Green against Trump and in defense of the federal programs that millions of Americans rely on.
Let’s show Congressman Al Green that we have his back as he stands up to Trump and fights for the more than 72 million people nationwide who have Medicaid. Split a contribution between our campaigns today.
Last weekend marked 60 years since civil rights activists marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in what became known as Bloody Sunday. During the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Congressman Green marched with other leaders and got in “good trouble, necessary trouble” in our shared struggle for equal rights.
When I reintroduced the Justice for All Act to restore and expand our civil rights laws last month, Al Green joined as a co-sponsor of that legislation. And I was proud to co-sponsor his Original Black History Month Resolution of 2025 to recognize and celebrate Black History Month.
In my first year in Congress in 2019, as Chair of the U.S. House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Congressman Green joined me in hosting a field hearing on equitable, safe, and affordable housing at Wayne County Community College in my home district. We are still fighting for affordable housing and pushing back against housing discrimination.
From healthcare to housing to civil rights and beyond, Congressman Al Green is a leader who is always willing to stand up and fight back against injustice and oppression. We need more bold, courageous leadership like his in Congress so we can build a government that works for the people rather than billionaires.
Split a contribution between my and Al Green’s campaigns today and show Congressman Green that we have his back as he speaks truth to power.
