Dear Friends,

This week, Republicans passed their partisan funding bill, which will give President Trump and Elon Musk a blank check to take money away from you and spend as they will. From the past two months of the Trump administration, we already know what they will attack: healthcare, Social Security, housing, food for children, and basic needs for Americans. Republicans bent the knee to Trump to give him exactly what he wanted — unlimited spending power. It's unacceptable and simply unamerican.

Your needs will always come first, and I will continue to stand against any legislation that fails to protect our communities.

I Voted NO on the Partisan Funding Bill

President Trump's agenda so far has only benefitted the top one percent, and House Republicans have weakly fallen in line.

Their partisan funding bill allows Trump and Elon Musk to continue their power grab and sidestep Congress. It cuts healthcare, limits gun violence prevention research, and cuts nearly $23 billion in veterans' benefits. Elon Musk has already shown that he has no regard for those who rely on Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare.

I voted against this reckless bill. I am only open to supporting a bipartisan funding agreement that stops harmful cuts and protects the needs of the American people.

Fighting for Community Violence Intervention Programs

Image

On Wednesday, I spoke with community violence intervention leaders from the University of Chicago's Crime Lab, who work every day to enhance programs that combat gun violence through community-driven solutions.

These intervention programs have saved countless lives through behavioral science strategies and community engagement initiatives that supplement law enforcement. Now, they are under attack by the Trump administration and gun lobbyists.

I will not let the Trump administration reverse the progress that we have made in tackling gun violence in our communities.

Recognizing Bloody Sunday

Image

Last Sunday marked 60 years since the remarkable march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, led by Martin Luther King Jr. and civil rights activists like John Lewis. These courageous individuals, even in the face of violent attacks by police officers, stood up for a more just society and equal rights for all Americans.

To honor the legacy of those that paved the way for us, I crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, arm in arm with my colleagues who are fighting for social justice today.

We stand on the shoulders of our civil rights heroes.
