I wanted to send you a quick note to explain why I voted NO on the House Republican funding bill – cloture, final passage, all of it.

Their bill does nothing to reign in the lawlessness we’ve seen from Trump and Elon over the past several weeks – in fact, it empowers them! It makes massive cuts to programs communities rely on and turns our government funding into slush funds for Trump and Elon to pick winners and losers with your taxpayer dollars.

Here’s what this means: Trump and Elon could decide to turn clean energy investments into a payday for fossil fuels. Money meant to stop fentanyl and opioids could fuel private prison operations and Trump’s mass deportations. The House Republican bill allows Trump and Elon to handpick which Army Corps, transit, and military construction projects move forward and which housing and utilities get funded in rural communities. Projects and federal funding promised to your community or nonprofit could be taken away with no warning and no real reason.

Trump has already made clear he is willing to extort people – even lawmakers – to get what he wants, and this bill only helps him do that by making lawmakers, governors, mayors, Head Start program directors, CEOs – everyone – come groveling to him to get their funding turned back on.

That’s not how this should work in America – Senators were not elected to beg Trump for federal resources.

We are living through chaotic times, so I understand any fears you may have – some days, I share them. But speaking out and using your voice MATTERS. You sent me here to be your voice, so you better believe I will keep fighting for you every step of the way. We will stand strong, and we will not stand down.
