Hey everybody, it’s Mark Kelly.
I just couldn’t vote for that budget.
When I was 22 years old, as I was joining the Navy, I never would’ve guessed this was where I’d end up.
But I’ll tell you this much: When I joined, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. That meant something to me then, and it still does now.
When you swear that oath, you aren’t swearing allegiance to a party, or to a person. It’s not conditional. The oath doesn’t change when the president is a Democrat or a Republican. It isn’t more or less important in times of peace or war, or when the economy is up or down. You are swearing to uphold our democratic form of government.
And as you read this, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are accumulating powers they were never meant to have. They don’t care about the rule of law, they don’t care who gets fired, they don’t care who gets hurt, and they don’t care how much damage they do — as long as they get their tax cuts, them and their rich friends.
I’ve dedicated my life to serving this country, and this is really important to me.
I upheld my oath as a Naval aviator, flying combat missions in Desert Storm. I upheld my oath as an astronaut, leading my crew into space. And to uphold that oath today, I had to vote no. You can be sure that I am going to continue to uphold that oath in the United States Senate, whatever comes my way.
