It’s time for real Democratic leadership in the Senate

The Senate just passed the dirty Republican spending bill, giving Musk and Trump free rein to escalate their dismantling of critical programs that protect our food, water, health, and climate.

Rather than leading the Senate opposition to this bad deal, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer cleared the way for it to pass — earning Trump’s praise.

What kind of opposition leadership is this?! Tell Schumer to step down as Senate Minority Leader. It’s time for real leadership.

Schumer: Step Down!

With Musk, Trump, and their allies in control of all three branches of government, it’s critical that Democrats use every tool at their disposal to thwart their attacks on basic, congressionally-approved programs.

As the minority in both the House and Senate, Democrats have few opportunities to unilaterally block what is happening. This spending vote was one of the very few opportunities they will have.

Republicans needed 60 votes to overcome a filibuster and pass the spending bill. Democrats could have rallied together and blocked anything from going forward without substantial steps to stop the elimination of critical programs and services.

Rather than lead or even follow the majority of his caucus, Senator Schumer chose to join with Republicans and a small number of Democratic senators to facilitate this partisan Republican bill passing.

Democrats should have a leader who will actually fight the Musk-Trump agenda and represent the interests of the vast majority of Democratic Senators. Tell Senator Schumer to step down now!

Make no mistake – this spending bill is horrible. It cuts funding for critical rural water systems and more, but it also does nothing to check Musk and Trump. Quite the opposite – it created a giant slush fund for them to cut and redirect any spending they want, in order to fund their pet projects.

Ultimately, Senator Schumer cleared the way for the passage of this dangerous bill.

The Musk-Trump agenda presents an existential threat to our food, water, climate, and democracy. It will take everything we have and everyone working together to protect all the things we hold dear. We need leadership willing to fight alongside us for our shared future.

It’s time for Senator Schumer to step aside in favor of new leadership willing to take on that fight.
