Friends -
I am writing to let you know that I just voted NO on the "continuing resolution" in the U.S. Senate.
Last night, I explained my thought process to 25,000 Michiganders on my first tele townhall, so I wanted to share with you, too.
Over the past few days, you've probably heard a lot of news and conversation about this "CR" so I wanted to take a moment to talk about what that means, and why I voted against it.
First, what is a CR?
A CR is short for continuing resolution.
Congress regularly passes bills that fund every part of the federal government. That agreement was set to expire tonight. But because Congress doesn't regularly approve annual budgets, we find ourselves in this pattern of approving short-term budgets continuously.
A CR continues funding for the government at current levels. If it doesn't pass, there's a government shutdown.
As a former government employee, I see government shut downs as an absolute last resort. But like everything else in government - things are different with Trump and Elon Musk in charge.
Not only would this CR result in major cuts to the Veterans Administration and some of our major infrastructure programs in Michigan, while harming our Great Lakes -- but my Republican colleagues offered me no assurances that approved money in the CR wouldn't just be redirected at the whims of Elon Musk.
And unless and until I can get some guarantees that money will be spent as it was appropriated by Congress, I can't get to yes.
That’s why I voted no, and I wanted you to hear why directly from me.
Thank you,
Elissa
