Dear MoveOn member,

The news broke last night that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will
vote to move forward on the disastrous Republican funding bill.^1 The same
bill that will put billionaires first and the rest of us dead last.^2 The
bill that Senate Republicans have tried to ram through would gut funding
on medical research for cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's, and take away
health care from millions of Americans.^3 And Schumer reportedly
surrendered his vote in order to avoid Democrats being blamed for a
government shutdown.
Nobody wants the government to shut down. Period. Republicans have control
of the House, Senate, and Presidency. Yet as the majority, Republicans
refused to come to the table and negotiate with Democrats to get the votes
to pass their budget plan, and that was on them to fix. Not Democrats.
Since Inauguration Day, President Trump and Elon Musk have been taking a
chainsaw to our government—slashing Social Security, firing air traffic
controllers, and more. Republicans needed Democrats to pass this
disastrous, devastating bill. Democrats finally had the upper hand to hold
them accountable. Any bipartisan legislation or concessions from
Republicans could've been the very thing that stood between millions of
people losing their Medicaid and Social Security. And a few Democratic
votes in the Senate gave away our very limited bargaining power.

fight back against Trump and Republicans' authoritarian agenda?

It doesn't make sense that a few senators would clear the way for
Republicans, after House Democrats stuck their necks out to combat a
horrible Republican-led House budget bill that would actively harm their
constituents.

Clearing the way for Donald Trump and Elon Musk to gut Social Security,
Medicare, and Medicaid is unacceptable. It's past time for Democrats to
fight and stop acting like it's business as usual. Sign the petition if

Our circumstances have not changed; we are still in a state of crisis and
chaos. Trump's administration, with the help of Elon Musk's so-called
"Department of Government Efficiency," has been giddy for weeks at just
the thought of gutting care for millions of people—whether it's Social
Security or Medicaid, food assistance for children, or funding for
veterans.^4
In just the past week, Elon Musk—emboldened by a blank check from Donald
Trump—made moves to make it harder for seniors to file Social Security
claims,^5 forced the Department of Education to lay off nearly half of its
staff and severely defund public education,^6 and struck a deal with
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to lay off 10,000 people from the United
States Postal Service, endangering the mail service that millions of
Americans rely on to communicate.^7
Every single day, there's a new headline that continues to prove the
point: [ [link removed] ]We're in unprecedented times, and Democrats need to act like it.

It's time for Democrats to throw out the usual playbook and start from
scratch. They need to do everything in their power to stop Trump's
assaults on our lives and communities. Democrats are the last line of
defense under this cruel, inhumane administration.

We are seeing strong Democratic leadership from some in this moment, but
they can't fight alone, and we need more than a few leaders speaking out
and blocking Trump's agenda.

We will need all of them on board to mitigate the harm that Trump and
Republicans are enacting. In the onslaught of attacks, we need a
principled and unified opposition that will take action to address the
crisis at hand and the crises to come. 

And Democrats need to hear from us—their constituents, many of whom will
bear the brunt of Democrats being overly cautious or timid. If enough of
us sign this petition, it'll send a clear signal that we're counting on
them to recognize the gravity of the situation and step up, and that we'll
support them when they do so.
