House Votes to Avoid Shutdown
This week the House of Representatives voted for a Continuing Resolution (CR) that would fund the federal government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2025. The CR passed by the House did not change Social Security or Medicare in any way, protecting these two important programs.
We are currently awaiting action in the U.S. Senate which will need to vote on the CR to avoid a government shutdown.
Border Crossings Reach Historic Lows
Last month, the Department of Homeland Security announced that illegal crossings at the southern border had dropped, and single-day border apprehensions were down to just 200 illegal aliens a day there. This is the lowest number of apprehensions at the southern border in over 15 years.
Further, the Department’s new focus on going after criminal illegal aliens has resulted in a doubling of the arrests of criminal aliens and a tripling of arrests of fugitives at large. This represents more than 7,000 illegal immigrants convicted of crimes and about 3,000 with pending criminal charges.
Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) also reported that over the past 50 days, more than 1,155 criminal gang members have also been arrested. That is more than twice the amount arrested during the same period in 2024. These arrests also include 39 known or suspected terrorists.

These numbers follow additional Executive Action to secure the border and the passage of the the Laken Riley Act into law. There is more work to be done to ensure our border is secure. While President Trump’s Executive Actions are critical in this effort, I’m working in Congress to get legislation passed that will secure the border regardless of which Administration is in charge. We must pass legislation to give U.S. Customs and Border Protection the resources they need to secure the border and keep our communities safe.
