Votes this Week: Legislation to Keep the Government Open, Prosecute Fraudulent COVID-19 Unemployment Claims, and Protect American Cryptocurrency Innovation

This week, the House voted and passed legislation to freeze federal spending and keep the government open, prosecute fraudulent pandemic unemployment claims, and reverse unnecessary bureaucracy in our digital asset sales. The top bills are as follows:

  1. H. R. 1968 – Full Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act – Rep. Tom Cole (OK-4)
    • This legislation funds the federal government at current discretionary spending levels through the remainder of the fiscal year to support President Trump's work to restore fiscal responsibility, cut wasteful spending, restore common sense back to our government, and secure the homeland.
      • Safeguards Americans from a supercharged Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
      • Contains an additional $6 billion for the Toxic Exposures Fund to treat veterans with service-related exposures to toxic substances.
      • Enhances defense investments and includes the largest pay raise for junior enlisted troops in over 40 years.
      • Provides important nutrition assistance to mothers, infants, and children.
      • Protects Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid Recipients from the disruption and confusion a shutdown will cause.
  2. H. R. 1156 – Pandemic Unemployment Fraud Enforcement Act – Rep. Jason Smith (MO-8)
    • This legislation extends the statue of limitations for prosecuting fraudulent COVID-19 unemployment claims from five to ten years, allowing federal law enforcement to continue holding criminals accountable and recovering billions in taxpayer dollars stolen during the pandemic.
  3. H. J. Res. 25 – Digital Asset Sales (CRA) Resolution – Rep. Mike Carey (R-15)
    • When the Biden Administration prioritized their far-left Green New Deal agenda over average Americans, they levied more than 225 harmful regulations against the oil and gas industry. This resolution repeals the Biden Administration's rule requiring offshore energy operators to conduct costly, time-consuming archaeological reports, which drive up production costs, weaken energy independence and increase energy prices for hardworking American families.

Rep. Loudermilk in House Financial Services Committee: A Federal Framework is Needed for Stablecoins to Protect Consumers and Reward Innovators

This week, during a House Financial Services Committee, I questioned witnesses about the development of a federal framework for dollar-backed payment Stablecoins and discussed how legislation like the Committee's STABLE Act will impact Stablecoin issuers, protect consumers, and foster competition and innovation.

Specifically, I asked about the similarities and differences between the 2023 TerraUSD and 2008 Reserve Primary Fund crises, and how Stablecoins would help the U.S. Dollar remain the world's currency.

Democrats get it all wrong: dollar-backed Stablecoins are not like demand deposits at all. Many users prefer dollar-backed Stablecoins as a short-term core position for cash management. When backed by high quality, liquid assets like U.S. Treasuries, stablecoins will give digital asset investors the confidence and convenience they need to engage in the market. We need a regulatory framework for stablecoins that protects consumers and rewards innovation.

Fraud Alert Friday: Identifying Waste, Fraud, and Abuse in the Federal Government

This newsletter series called "Fraud Alert Friday" is highlight waste, fraud, and abuse occurring across the federal government, detailing eye-opening fraud and misconduct.

Alert: Recently, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) identified that the Small Business Administration (SBA) granted nearly 5,600 loans for $312 million to borrowers whose listed owner was 11 years old or younger at the time of the loan. These loans were issued in 2020 and 2021, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the agency said it's unclear what these loans were actually used for.

Alert: In another instance, DOGE revealed that in 2020 and 2021 the SBA issued $333 million in loans to 3,095 borrowers loans over 115 years of age. Unbelievably, these borrowers were still marked alive in the Social Security database.

These are just a couple examples of taxpayer money being severely mismanaged, further emphasizing why greater accountability, rigorous oversight, and reform is needed in the federal spending process. To read more on these, click here.

Rep. Loudermilk to the Daily Signal: SEC's CAT is Another Unwarranted Surveillance Program Without Any Restraint

In case you missed it, I recently sat down with the Daily Signal to discuss my Protecting Investors' Personally Identifiable Information Act legislation to restrict the Security and Exchange Commission's automatic collection of American Investors' personal data through the Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) with the goal of eliminating the potential for breaches by foreign adversaries and criminal actors. Specifically, I highlighted how this system is shaping up to be another unwarranted surveillance program without any restraint or guardrails.
