“Leave No One Behind.”
John, it’s the slogan I ran on, and it’s the first thing you see on welcome signs when driving into the great state of Maryland.
The story behind those words started when I joined the Army at 17 — I was still a minor, so my mom had to sign the paperwork for me to join.
I enlisted because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my mentors in military school. They had shown me how to be accountable for others and overcome big challenges. When fellow soldiers needed our help, it was never a question of where they’re from or what party they voted for. We were all Americans in that moment, working toward a shared goal. To me, that’s true patriotism.
True patriotism is believing that the people around you — your fellow soldiers, your neighbors, and your community — deserve support now matter what.
That’s stuck with me, even years after hanging up my uniform.
Too often, politics is centered around division. But when we’re able to embrace each other — just like how I embraced what I learned in military school and in the Army — we can create a future where no one is left behind.
As Maryland's Governor, I promise to fight for that future.
Thanks for reading.
Elevate,
Wes
