Email from Rep. Van Duyne Working to ensure we can catch all the fraudsters stealing your taxpayer dollars through unemployment insurance fraud Washington, D.C. – I recently had the pleasure of meeting with SMU Tower Center Scholars during their class trip to Washington! These students are part of a selective, multidisciplinary program in public policy and international affairs and we had a wonderful discussion about their goals. Monday marked 50 days of President Trump’s second term! He has already made incredible progress delivering on his promises -- compared to January 19th, we have safer communities, a stronger economy, nearly $2 trillion in new private sector investment to spur American manufacturing, and more secure borders. I’m working to help support the Trump Administration to continue delivering for the American people. Later, I joined 401 of my colleagues in voting to crack down on the tunnels used by Mexican drug cartels, who have seized control of our southern border, creating a national security crisis. These tunnels allow cartels to smuggle deadly drugs and dangerous individuals into our country and are even accessed by foreign adversaries, including possible terrorists, willing to pay top dollar to evade detection. Tuesday, we had a Small Business Committee hearing on restoring the Small Business Administration to its mission of supporting our local job creators. I recently had the opportunity to meet with SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler. I was glad to talk about our annual North Texas Job Fair that gave more than 25,000 individuals the chance to explore new careers last summer! As you may know, fraudsters stole more than $100 billion in pandemic unemployment insurance meant to help working Americans affected by government-mandated shutdowns. Unfortunately, less than 5% of stolen tax dollars have been recovered, and the statute of limitations was set to expire in just a few weeks. This week, I voted to give law enforcement more time to prosecute criminals and recover stolen tax dollars from fraudsters. Read more in my Work of the Week section below. It was great to meet with some members of the Dallas City Council to discuss opportunities to work together to help our region. I’m glad to partner with our local leaders to ensure we continue to prioritize public safety and pro-growth policies. Later, I had the opportunity to catch up with some of my friends from the Greater Dallas Taiwanese Chamber. The chamber was a great partner during our 2024 North Texas Job Fair, and I am looking forward to our continued collaboration on local economic development as well as improving U.S.-Taiwanese relationships. Wednesday, my Ways and Means Committee colleagues and I met for a markup. Sadly, my Democrat colleagues chose to spend hours yelling about DOGE and arguing against transparency. Ironically, Democrats were the ones that weaponized the illegal disclosure of private taxpayer information, including the tax returns of President Trump, because it served their political goals. You can click here for my remarks highlighting this. I was glad to meet with city leaders from North Richland Hills to discuss opportunities to remove federal red tape and our continued partnership to deliver for Texas-24 families. It was wonderful to visit with students from Coram Deo Academy during their school trip to Washington! They asked thoughtful questions about public service and we had a meaningful discussion about their goals for the future. It was great to meet with USAA, a top provider of financial services to our military families and veterans. I appreciated hearing more about their efforts to support mental health initiatives for veterans. During my meeting with the American Apparel and Footwear Association, which is comprised of American apparel and footwear brands, retailers, and manufacturers with a collective 3.5 million U.S. workers, we discussed the importance of trade. I was glad to share my priorities on the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade as we work grow our economy and drive a manufacturing resurgence. Texas-24 Work of the Week This week, I helped pass bipartisan legislation to extend the statute of limitations to prosecute fraudsters who illegally claimed unemployment insurance during the pandemic. This will give law enforcement more time to collect more than $100 billion in stolen tax dollars. Texas-24 Hometown Hero Our Texas-24 Hometown Heroes are Luke and Jen Huch of Euless! After their precious baby Lion was diagnosed with leukemia, they founded Free Music to provide hope, strength, and joy to children and families who have faced similar life-threatening diagnoses. North Texas U.S. Service Academies Forum As a Member of Congress, I have the honor of nominating exceptional Texas-24 individuals to our nation’s service academies.
