My friend Diana Richardson, a member of the New York Assembly and a powerful progressive voice for racial and economic justice, was pepper-sprayed by police this weekend while protesting peacefully in Brooklyn.

Now, Diana is being challenged in the June 23 primary by a well-funded former member of the IDC -- the group of turncoat Democrats who allowed Republicans to control of Albany for years.

Diana’s challenger is Jesse Hamilton, a former State Senator and member of the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) that caucused with Republicans until State Senator Zellnor Myrie defeated him in 2018.

Many of you were part of the fight to defeat the IDC, elect Zellnor, and take back control of the State Senate in 2018, so you know what is at stake here. I’ve been a supporter of Diana from the start, and it couldn’t be clearer that we need to keep her fierce, truth-telling voice in Albany now.

Zellnor and Diana, both Black elected officials who showed up at the demonstration Friday at Barclays Center to protest police brutality peacefully, were pepper-sprayed and handcuffed by police. The video of Diana speaking to a reporter directly after being pepper-sprayed has been viewed nearly 5 million times!

I was in the streets with Diana and other elected officials calling out the violence of police officers against protesters, and the ill-advised curfew late last night -- and I will be keeping you updated about the ways the NYC Council is taking action to demand accountability and restraint from the NYPD.
