President Trump's open expression of disunity and discord in this moment is less than unacceptable.
In a time where our country so desperately needs leadership, he is cowering away -- instead of addressing the nation in a sincere and empathetic manner, he creates a deeper divide.
Trump has not performed his duty as a uniter in this difficult moment.
I am outraged and heartbroken at the events occurring across our country, but I still have hope.
As Dr. Martin Luther King once said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
Here in Anchorage, people from all walks of life came together and marched peacefully this past weekend. Hugs were had. Tears were shed. Love was present.
In Louisville, protesters protected a cop. In Camden, the police chief marched with protesters. In Spokane and in many cities across the country, police officers kneeled in solidarity.
These are the stories and examples we must lift up -- that show it's possible to do it right and engage each other as human beings.
As Bobby Kennedy said when Dr. King was assassinated: "What we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love, and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country."
