Dear john, The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that severe weather is expected this weekend, with the possibility for damaging winds, tornadoes, and hail Saturday night into Sunday. I encourage everyone to make weather safety preparations, stay aware, and pay close attention to updates from the Peachtree City NWS office and local news throughout the weekend. As always, I am grateful for the essential work our meteorologists and public safety officials do to keep us prepared for severe weather. | This week, the Trump Administration made sweeping cuts to the U.S. Department of Education by conducting mass layoffs. These firings are reckless and will devastate every student and family in Georgia. In our state alone, there are almost 2 million K-12 students—over half of whom come from low-income backgrounds—and hundreds of thousands of students with disabilities. The majority of fired employees worked in financial aid programs which help millions of Georgians attend and complete college; they supported programs for career and technical education and workforce development; they helped provide opportunities and services for individuals with disabilities. Eliminating these positions threatens the success of every student in America and abandons families who rely on our support. Congress, not the President, retains the authority to create and alter federal agencies. My Democratic colleagues and I will fight to protect the opportunities and support services the Department of Education provides and set America's students up for success. | This week, I also met with the families who have shared their stories in advocacy to stop hazing on college campuses (pictured below). The pain of losing a child is deeply personal to me, which is why I have been so honored to work with families who channeled their own grief into making progress via policy, so that more families in America can be spared the pain we have felt. Working together, I am proud that my bill—the Stop Campus Hazing Act—was signed into law. | For high school students in the district interested in the arts, I encourage you to register for my 2025 Congressional Art Competition!
