John,
We are at a crossroads in history. We are sickened by the horrific killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless African Americans who were murdered at the hands of law enforcement.
And last night, Trump ordered tear gas into peaceful protesters so he could get a measly photo-op. I’m disgusted with his lack of leadership. I’m tired of Black and Brown bodies dying. And I’m angry enough to keep fighting.
Time and time again, we have seen far too many young men and women of color murdered by police for failing to use their turn signal while driving or reaching for their wallet. Police officers are supposed to defuse violence — not inflict it on Black and Brown communities.
As millions of Americans march and protest against these injustices, we must keep speaking up and demanding change. Systemic racism has been part of our nation’s history since the beginning. From centuries of oppression including slavery to Jim Crow, lynchings, redlining, the failed War on Drugs, and mass incarceration, the struggles for freedom and equality are far from over.
As a country, it’s going to take a serious reckoning to acknowledge the role racism plays in our criminal justice system and take steps to address these biases in all levels of government. We cannot allow people who swear to serve and protect our communities abuse their power and target, attack, and kill Black and Brown bodies.
That’s why my colleagues, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Karen Bass, and I introduced a resolution that condemns all acts of racial profiling, police brutality, and excessive use of force.
Our resolution calls for the adoption of reforms and policies at all levels of government to end these injustices including the following:
* Improve oversight and independent investigations to hold law enforcement accountable.
* Calling on DOJ to investigate all acts of racial profiling, police brutality, and violence as civil rights violations.
* Establish all-civilian review boards to investigate police misconduct at a community level.
* Adopt sound and unbiased law enforcement policies at all levels of government that reduce the disparate impact of police brutality,
racial profiling, and use of force on Black and Brown people and other historically marginalized communities.
Join me and my colleagues in condemning all acts of police brutality and fundamental reforms in our criminal justice system. We cannot wait any longer to act. Will you sign our petition pushing for fundamental police reforms to end these injustices?

We must work toward a better future where we have real accountability and justice for our communities. Thank you for using your voices to demand for action. I want you to know that every donation, signature, social media post, and conversation you have about this gives me the strength to fight for you in Congress.
We cannot rest until there is racial, economic, and social justice for all in America.
Stay safe.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
