Dear John,
What an intense beginning of the year! These are challenging times, the world is not slowing down, but we won’t either. We are moved by people taking it to the streets in Serbia, Slovakia and huge anti-nazi protest in Germany. Ahead of the German elections, we are sending our supports to our friends from Bündnis90/Die Grünen.

Good Luck
Bündnis90/Die Grünen!
They have been in government in Germany since 2021 and have delivered time and time again, improving the lives of people in the country.
Some of their achievements include:
🟢 Increasing minimum wage by 22%
🟢 Making renewable energy the main source of electricity
🟢 Making public transport cheaper and more accessible with the Climate Ticket
🟢 Passing the self-determination act for trans & non-binary people
These elections are not only crucial for them, but for all Europe as well as future of democracy and rule of law.
German Greens breaking a new record
Ahead of the German elections our colleagues at Bündnis 90/Die Grünen are seeing an unprecedented growth in their membership! In an all-time record for them 5000 new members joined the party in just five days. People across Germany are getting organised and joining the Greens to fight for a green, social and democratic country with #TeamHabeck!
Cordon sanitaire broken in Germany
German conservatives are breaking the firewall against the far right.
Centre-right parties, with support from the far right, voted on motions which included measures to turn away asylum seekers at the borders regardless of their needs, and introduce permanent border controls. Although this won’t come into law, these proposals are not only deeply insulting to the human dignity of migrants, but they are also illegal, under both German and European law.
Together with our green friends in Germany, we strongly support a humane asylum and migration system. We are moved by the powerful movement by hundreds of thousands of anti-nazi protestors for democracy, for Europe and against the far right.
History cannot repeat itself and we believe that German citizens won’t let it happen.
Students in Serbia are unstoppable!
The situation in Serbia is continuing to evolve, with the recent resignation of the Serbian Prime Minister and Mayor of Novi Sad, the town where the collapse of the train station roof sparked a nationwide protest movement. The students marched from Belgrade to Novi Sad, where 24h blockade took place.
We continue to stand with the students, teachers & people protesting in Serbia.
Their demands are:
🔍 The release of documents on the station’s reconstruction
⚖️ Accountability for the rooftop collapse & attacks on protesters
📚 More funding for education
❤️ To those protesting in Serbia, we stand with you.

We are moved by the protesters in Serbia, but not only. We are seeing citizens organising themselves in Slovakia and Romania as well. Fighting for their fundamental rights and democratic values, they show that Europe can be strong only when united.

European Greens’ new Committee meets in Brussels
Just like people around the world, we are heartened by the recent developments in, and outside, of Europe. Our newly elected committee met in Brussels to strategise how we can strengthen our green movement, build alliances towards more Green, just and equal Europe!
Oil extracting project declared unlawful
Rosebank was a new project to extract oil from the North Sea that would have caused emissions equal to the 28 lowest income countries combined. Recently, it was ruled unlawful by the courts.
This is the result of an incredible campaign by Scottish Greens and climate activists.
Our future lies in renewable energy, not in fossil fuels. It is safest, cheapest and best for our overheating planet. The fight against fossil fuels continues.
PFAS
Toxic forever chemicals are simply everywhere.
The Forever Pollution Project identified 23,000 sites all over Europe contaminated by forever chemicals (known as PFAS). The chemical lobby invested millions to produce studies meant to conceal the impact on health & planet, in the hopes of stopping legislative restrictions on PFAS.
It will cost 100 billion euros a year to eliminate it from our environment. The industry must pay for that clean up. Their pollution is putting our lands and access to clean water at risk.
The EU must ban PFAS now.

In an increasingly polarised world, how do we mobilise majorities around the visions we aspire to, rather than the politics we oppose? The far right has become a defining force in politics, reshaping narratives and capitalising on fear and division. The new edition of the Green European Journal, Head On: Facing the Far Right ([link removed] ) , explores how progressives, guided by political ecology, can counter its rhetoric with justice and hope. To mobilise majorities, the green movement needs to forge alliances and reclaim the political and cultural discourse. Facing the far right head-on means focusing less on what we oppose, and more on the world we desire.
For the past few months/years, and more visibly and aggressively so in the last few weeks, the right has been questioning the operational grants that environmental NGOs receive from the Commission via the LIFE funds, saying that the Commission is using NGOs to lobby the Parliament.
"We demand that the European Commission protect independent civil society and reject these draconian restrictions. Civil society must be free to organise, advocate, and fight for justice without fear of losing funding. Together, we can make this happen. Join us in reminding EU leaders that without civil society, democracy itself is at risk."

In this new year we are trying something new! We asked our Co-Presidents, Terry Reintke and Bas Eickhout, to sit down and give us their unfiltered opinion on the challenges this year ahead. Listen now to Terry and Bas as they discuss the realities of daily politics. How are they coping with the idea of four more years of Trump? How do we make sure European policy responds to people's real world problems? How can we make sure we invest in clean energy in a way that's fair for everyone? We discussed what politicians need to do to regain trust from its citizens, how we can stand up against a disruptive Trump presidency and how a Green Industrial Deal will provide jobs in the European Union.
