Been a little blue lately? We feel you. Recent events on the national scene have not been happy ones for progressive people.
But hope is still alive. Even now, as a reactionary political movement threatens the causes we care about, we know we can win in the end.
How do we know?
Because we’ve done it before. Against seemingly impossible odds, Progressives worked hard, kept believing and won.
On marriage equality for example. Not so long ago, it seemed same-sex marriage would never happen. And now look. It’s the law of the land.
It was just 2004, an election year, when conservatives were so confident in the anti-gay bias of voters that they put same-sex marriage bans on the ballot in 13 states—and won in all 13.
And now look. Marriage equality is the law nationwide and enjoys at least a plurality of public support in every U.S. state. In 2004, 60% of Americans opposed same-sex marriage. Today, 69% of Americans support it.
This didn’t happen by chance.
It happened because those of us who’ve always believed in marriage equality worked hard for many years and made it happen.
Here at CREDO Mobile, we’ve been fighting for marriage equality since our founding, in 1985. We donated millions of dollars to nonprofit groups dedicated to marriage equality. We fought for and won the freedom for all to marry in dozens of states.
We recently celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We should remember what he once said: “The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” We should also remember that it only bends if people take action to bend it.
