** Shut it down! IEB and ISF co-host rally at SF offices of Senators, and the results
------------------------------------------------------------

Last week, Indivisible East Bay—and 16 other local Indivisible groups—joined forces to hold a rally and protest in front of the office of Senator Alex Padilla. We then continued the rally by marching to the front of the temporary office of Senator Adam Schiff. Police estimated that over 900 people attended!

Read Indivisible EB’s blog post ([link removed]) about the event and watch the videos on our YouTube channel ([link removed]) .

Our calls and rallies are making an impact.

Just the other day, our Senators Schiff and Padilla were involved in an all-night filibuster ([link removed]) of the horribly destructive Treasury nominee and Project 2025 author Russell Vought. It’s obvious that they are feeling the pressure. This is the kind of action we want to see, but we need more.

Our Senators (and our Representatives) must absolutely shut down all Congressional business until this coup is stopped and Congress is back in charge of the purse.

Call your Members of Congress ([link removed]) TODAY. The more people call, the more pressure they feel to act. We are calling on our Senators to stop all Senate votes until the Musk coup is abandoned.

** Mayor Lurie is out of line. Tell him: hands off the Police Commission!
------------------------------------------------------------
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is attempting to remove Max Carter-Oberstone from the city's Police Commission. Commissioner Carter-Oberstone is a vocal advocate for police reform. He is pushing for limits on “pretextual stops”, has opposed former mayor Breed’s policy efforts, and exposed Breed’s practice of having commission appointees preemptively sign undated resignation letters. Lurie has not publicly stated specific reasons for seeking Carter-Oberstone’s resignation.

Mayor Lurie’s office asked Carter-Oberstone to resign in a meeting, but he refused. Under the City Charter, the mayor cannot remove an appointed police commissioner without the consent of a majority of the supervisors. The Board of Supervisors will be holding a meeting on February 25 to consider the mayor’s request to remove Carter-Oberstone.

We are not comfortable with Mayor Lurie seeking authority over the Police Commission and removing one of the most vocal advocates of police reform. We are asking you to join us in pressuring our Supervisors to stop the Mayor’s attempt at a power grab. Especially now, when San Franciscans are fighting to resist fascism from the Trump administration, we need to know that our police are under independent oversight.

Remember, unlike our federal officials, local officials do not receive many calls, so your call can make an impact. The BoS meeting will be February 25, so call soon!

Call Mayor Lurie and your Board of Supervisors. ([link removed]) Tell your Supervisor to decline the attempt to fire Commissioner Carter-Oberstone, and tell Mayor Lurie you are disappointed by his actions.

Thank you to Attorney General Rob Bonta and City Attorney David Chiu for resisting Trump’s agenda on the state and local levels.
------------------------------------------------------------
As Indivisible SF members, we hold that no matter what we look like, what our income is or where we're from, all people deserve to live in freedom, safety, and dignity. We know that people move to have a better life for their families. That's why San Francisco passed a sanctuary ordinance in 1989.

In an order from the United States Department of Justice, Attorney General Bondi threatened to withhold federal funding from Chicago and the State of Illinois for their sanctuary policies protecting immigrants. Such actions against sanctuary cities such as San Francisco would be devastating for all of us. Losing access to services that we ALL depend upon will make our lives worse.

In preemptive response against similar actions in San Francisco, SF City Attorney David Chiu is taking the lead, joined by other cities across the country, in filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration. The lawsuit aims to protect sanctuary and all communities in our city from Attorney General Bondi’s ideologically-motivated overreach.

Call City Attorney Chiu ([link removed]) and tell him thank you for protecting our sanctuary status.

Additionally, our Attorney General Rob Bonta has been using his power to protect Californians since day one of the Trump administration. We want to thank him for the multiple lawsuits he's already filed individually and with other attorneys general. We are asking him to continue to do more, including considering criminal charges against Musk and DOGE.

Call AG Bonta and tell him: ([link removed]) thank you and continue to hold the Trump administration to account.

Trump’s Attorney General Pam Bondi is defunding the police
------------------------------------------------------------
Back in 2020, the George Floyd Uprising brought new clarity to millions of Americans on the unjust, racist treatment of Black people by police. Police kill Black Americans with impunity.

With this clarity came a demand: Defund the police. Different people and organizations had different views of the details, but the broad consensus was that police departments are given too much money to buy too many weapons and employ cops who should’ve lost their jobs (at minimum) for their lethal, racist misconduct.

In the nearly five years since then, that demand was left unfulfilled… until now. We were more than a little bit surprised to see Trump’s new attorney general, Pam Bondi, take action to defund local police this week, as part of the Administration’s ideological crusade against sanctuary cities like San Francisco.

This isn’t quite what defunding proponents wanted, and we certainly won’t hail her as a racial-justice hero for an action motivated by anti-immigrant ideology. Moreover, we’re concerned that Attorney General Bondi’s overreach will harm actual public-safety programs, which is why we’re thankful to City Attorney Chiu for suing to stop it.

** Ideologic Frenzy? Meeting a Deadline? Both?
------------------------------------------------------------
One way to view Trump/Musk's ruthless trample, slash, and destroy assault on the non-defense half of the federal government is as the vicious hubris of ideological fanaticism. But there's also a deeper strategy to their frenzy.
Trump/Musk know that their assaults will be challenged in federal court, which might delay the budget cuts demanded by the Deficit Hawks past the December 31st deadline to extend the Trump Tax Scam. Their strategy may be to rush the cases through federal district courts (where they are likely to lose) and then expedite them directly to the highly-partisan MAGA Republican Supreme Court where they are likely to win. If so, then for them, time is of the essence—hence their frenetic slash-and-burn tactics.

Voting is open in ADEM! Time to get your ballot in.
------------------------------------------------------------

Every two years, Democrats across California vote to elect the delegates who will represent them in the California Democratic Party. That time is upon us once again.

The process is called the Assembly Delegate Election Meeting ([link removed]) , or ADEM. We wrote in late 2020 about what the ADEM is for and how it helps build power ([link removed]) .

Each Assembly district will get to elect 14 delegates. You can now vote in the ADEM election ([link removed]) online, or you can vote in-person later this month. You have until 6 PM on Sunday, February 23 to register for in-person voting. In-person voting will happen Saturday and Sunday, February 22–23 at locations up and down the state ([link removed]) .

For those looking for a slate of progressive candidates, our friends at The League of Pissed-Off Voters have linked to the Grassroots Rising slates ([link removed]) . Neither we nor the League have endorsed any candidates in the ADEM elections.
