The Trump administration and President Musk’s DOGE are now setting their sights on dismantling the U.S. Department of Education—and the consequences for students, teachers, and families will be devastating.
Reports confirm that a majority of the department’s workforce has been placed on leave, and Trump is preparing an executive order to shut down the agency entirely. This means gutting Pell Grants, special education funding, and federal student loans—lifelines that have lifted millions of Americans out of poverty and opened the door to opportunity.
The message couldn’t be clearer: Trump and his allies want education to be a privilege for the wealthy few, not a right for all.
While we may be stuck with four years of this reckless federal mismanagement, we have the power to fight back in Arizona.
Here’s the reality: The Arizona GOP isn’t interested in strengthening public education. Their focus? Expanding the school voucher program—an unregulated, fraud-ridden scheme that diverts public funds into private schools with religious curriculum and even luxury expenses like ski trips and grand pianos. In addition, he is incorporating propagandist and sometimes racist PragerU doctrine into our school curriculum. Meanwhile, our public schools are underfunded and struggling—and the GOP refuses to fix it.
This is why ousting Tom Horne, Arizona’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, is a top priority in 2026 for us at MCDP. His anti-public education and pro-PragerU agenda is a direct threat to our students, our teachers, and the future of our state. We must also protect our Democratic incumbents, the only leaders committed to defending and expanding education access for all Arizonans.
