Policy: Reconciliation Update

As soon as this week, Congressional leadership will begin the budget process known as "reconciliation" that allows the Senate to pass certain bills with a simple 50-vote majority. We won't know the full parameters of the policies under consideration for a minute. But deep cuts to federal Medicaid spending, new restrictions on immigrants' use of benefits, exclusionary tax policies, public charge and more could be considered. This is in addition to  all the border security nonsense. This fight will take a few months. ALL members of Congress are critical, and there will be multiple opportunities for activism and engagement. Continue to stay tuned to our newsletter for further updates and ways to get involved.

Advocacy: No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act

Trump has issued an executive order to strip federal funding from cities and states that do not assist the federal government with mass deportations. This action would take away federal funding for essential public services, health, and education programs that benefit all people, not just immigrants. Although he currently lacks the power to enforce this, the No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act, legislation that would give him this authority, is currently moving through Congress. A vote on this legislation is expected soon. There are two easy ways to educate your Member of Congress about the impact this bill could have on your communities: 1) Organizations can sign a letter organized by NILC and CLASP; 2) Individuals can join the CHN Action letter campaign at the link below to send a message to Congress urging them to reject this legislation.

New Resource: “The Fierce Urgency of Now: Messages that Advance Diversity and Equal Opportunity”

The Trump administration has launched a series of attacks on immigration, diversity, healthcare, civil rights, and much more. Now more than ever, it’s important that all advocates communicate effectively in responding to these attacks. To aid in this response, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights has released "The Fierce Urgency of Now: Messages that Advance Diversity and Equal Opportunity"— a messaging guide providing evidence-based strategies to combat these attacks and advance equal opportunity.
