This could have BIG implications for our democracy

John,

Imagine voting in an election with no problems, only to receive correspondence down the line that your ballot is being challenged. This has just happened in North Carolina, and not only for a handful of voters. I’m talking for more than 60,000 voters.

The Republican challenger who lost last November’s state supreme court election is contesting the ballots of more than 60,000 voters. The state supreme court’s GOP supermajority is threatening democracy by baselessly blocking the certification of Democratic incumbent Justice Allison Riggs’ victory. And even now that a state court has just rejected his legal argument, the GOP challenger is still refusing to concede.

John, as a proud North Carolinian, it pains me to witness what’s happening in the Tar Heel state right now. This is some extreme voter suppression. It’s why, last month, I felt compelled to stand before the North Carolina Supreme Court in Raleigh and read names from the list of over 60,000 voters directly affected by this.

It couldn’t be more clear: We can’t let anti-democracy extremists get away with attacks like these.

That’s why the work of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee is so important. We’re working to defend free and fair elections in North Carolina and nationwide. And we’ll keep fighting to elect candidates (including state supreme court justices) who uphold the will of the people — and respect the freedom to vote.

If you are as outraged as I am right now, can you pitch in $30 or anything you can to support our critical work?

I wish I could say that the North Carolina Supreme Court’s outrageous behavior here is out of character. But this is not an isolated case. And they haven’t been afraid to push an anti-democracy agenda even when it reverses their court’s own extremely recent precedent.

You see, in 2022, before the right-wing supermajority was in place, the fair maps movement won Harper v. Hall. In that case, the North Carolina Supreme Court struck down the legislature's gerrymandered congressional and state legislative maps. The ruling protected North Carolinians’ right to pick their politicians — not the other way around.

But weeks later, Republicans took back the majority on the state supreme court and announced they would reconsider that ruling. They went on to overturn the decision in 2023. By 2024, North Carolina’s congressional map was no longer a 50-50 split. Instead, Republicans claimed 71% of the seats.

This situation outlines just how much our democracy is threatened — and how urgently we need to safeguard fair representation and fair maps from extremists. They are unapologetic and unmoving in their attacks on our fundamental rights. But we are unafraid to fight back and unwilling to give up.

I’m grateful that this team continues to shine a light on power grabs like what’s happening right now in North Carolina. Can we count on you to make a donation to help fuel the fight for free and fair elections?

Thank you,

Ted Corcoran
