Council House stand up to knife crime

A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

Following recent events in the city centre, on Saturday, along with community leaders, campaigners, and residents, I attended the Stand Up To Knife Crime peaceful gathering in the city centre. We can only eradicate knife crime if each and everyone of us steps up and plays our part. Together, we can build a safer  Nottingham because every life is worth more.

I was proud to celebrate my first International Women’s Day as leader of this great city at Central Library on Saturday and meet East Midlands Feminist Arch, Soroptimist International Nottingham, Nottingham Women's History Group and Mum Essentials. There is so much excellent work happening across our city to champion and support women.

On Tuesday, I headed down to London to attend the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee meeting to give evidence on the impacts of government funding on cities like Nottingham and what more the government could do support.

Cllr Neghat Khan at door of No.10

Last night, I was honoured to have been invited to 10 Downing Street to join the Prime Minister and key members of the Muslim community for a special iftar gathering. The Prime Minister spoke about the importance of community engagement, unity and never letting scenes of the previous summer riots divide us.

There are also a number of events and celebrations taking place in our communities over the weekend and into next week.

Tonight our Hindu community are celebrating Holi, the festival of colours, love and spring, and I would like to wish them a happy and safe celebration.

On Sunday the Muslim community will be holding the annual "Iftar in the Square" event, breaking the fast as the sun sets during the blessed month of Ramadan and a fantastic opportunity to experience the tradition, meet new people and share meals in an atmosphere of peace and unity.

Finally, on Monday the annual St Patrick’s Day event returns to the city centre, celebrating the city and region’s vibrant Irish community and descendants. Old Market Square will host a range of Irish and Irish-inspired live music and culture for everyone to enjoy.

Green Heart
Securing the future of the Broad Marsh site

Securing the long-term future and development of the Broad Marsh site is a major priority for the Council. There have been many hurdles to overcome so it’s really positive news to see a sale agreement coming to Executive Board on Tuesday next week.

It remains a key development opportunity for Nottingham and this deal, if approved, means that the Council is able to secure a significant capital receipt for the land but, crucially, remain involved in helping to shape its future.

The proposed buyer has ambitious plans for more than 1,000 homes, significant retail, office and community space, as well as the creation of around 2,000 jobs for local people.

We understand that the delayed development of Broad Marsh has been a frustration for many since the part-demolished shopping centre was suddenly handed back to the Council in 2020 following the collapse of intu.

It did, however, give us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to completely rethink the way the space was used – and we thank everyone who took the time to contribute to our Big Conversation consultation with their ideas.

This deal, combined with all the recent council improvements including a new Central Library and outdoor play area, new Broad Marsh bus station and car park, work to open up Sussex Street outside the college and the fantastic Green Heart, would further enhance a key gateway into our city.

Clifton town centre

Further details welcomed for £20m Clifton funding

The City Council has this week welcomed more details being released on £20m of funding for improvements to Clifton.

The Government had already formally approved the money, which had originally been announced by the previous Government, but a prospectus has now been published that expands on how the project will work.

A Town Board, chaired by Stephen Hackney, the Pastor of Hope Church, in Clifton, was set up previously and it is likely to now be expanded slightly, with the public getting more opportunities to have their say on what specific improvements they want to see.
