Trump has been threatening to shut down the Department of Education for years — but now, it's actually happening.

On Tuesday, the department announced it was firing more than 1,300 of its staff. And Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed that these mass layoffs are the first step toward dismantling the Department of Education for good. 

The Department of Education is critical in funding public schools and making sure our students are learning at the appropriate pace and standards. Without it, the future of education is at risk.
