Dear John,
Our Defence forces have been in demand over the last few weeks as our navy ships and our air force planes monitored the presence of Chinese ships in the international waters of the Tasman Sea. There was some concern that the Chinese authorities gave very limited warning of the exercises with three ships that included some live firing. This was monitored by the Australian Defence Force too. As you may know civilian air services were required to make some fairly short-notice route changes to keep out of harm’s way. Now that this legal but unusual incursion has ended, I have received the thanks of the Australian High Commissioner to New Zealand HE Harinder Sidhu AM when we met on Tuesday.
At the beginning of the week I agreed that New Zealand Defence Force personnel should be sent to Queensland to help with the response to Cyclone Alfred. Part of the deployment will include assisting our Kiwi Urban Search and Rescue teams to travel there at the request of the Queensland State Government. Deputy National Commander Brendon Nally says the special FENZ urban search and rescue team achieved a “heavy” USAR international classification last year.
During this week we sent our UK-based Defence attaché to Paris for the meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” where military officials from 30 countries led by the United Kingdom and France, are discussing enforcing a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict. The outcome of this meeting will indicate what further involvement New Zealand’s Defence Forces might have in supporting Ukraine.
Launch of the Investment Summit by Rt Hon Christopher Luxon
Our Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has launched an ambitious growth and foreign investment summit today that aims to attract investment capital to New Zealand. He is very focussed on getting the Government’s big infrastructure plans underway with funds from many sources like foreign hedge funds, regional and global banks and pension funds, and using the skills of construction experts who are familiar with completing really large infrastructure projects.
The Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop hopes that attracting large investors will provide opportunities for New Zealanders to get meaningful jobs that bring economic prosperity, potential for more growth and a significant rise in the standard of living for all Kiwi families, over time.
The Minister and the Prime Minister agree that New Zealand needs to show it is open for business and that it is a country worth investing in.
Among the big investors attending will be the Canadian giant Brookfield Asset Management, the BlackRock-owned Global Investment Partners, Singapore-based Keppel Ltd, and Aberdeen Investments, as well as New Zealand's Morrison and other big New Zealand-based funds.
The main New Zealand banks are attending, along with Australian investment giant Macquarie Bank, and a range of iwi groups and their investment arms.
There will be representatives from sovereign wealth funds from Malaysia and Korea and a Canadian Pension fund based in Quebec (CDPQ) will also be attending.
A number of big corporate lawyers, including MinterEllison, RuddWatts and Bell Gully, as well as corporate advisory types such as Jarden and Mercer, and large global consultancies such as KPMG, are going to be present.
Plenty of global infrastructure companies, including CIMIC, CPB, Acciona, Downer, Hyundai Engineering, and Fletchers will take part.
The Prime Minister Rt Hon Christopher Luxon, Finance Minister Nicola Willis, Hon Chris Bishop, Education and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford, and Minister for Regulation David Seymour are speaking. Their subjects will include transport, health, corrections, justice and education, meaning the big construction projects they talk about might include new schools, hospitals, Justice property and corrections facilities.
Topics for infrastructure presentations will include new and improved roads and there will also be panels on renewable and clean energy.
As well as technology, I will be speaking about opportunities in Space and Advanced Transports.
Other Government ministers will be talking about what is happening in their areas, what the Government is doing to make it easier to invest in New Zealand and what the specific upcoming opportunities are for those in attendance.
This is the Government putting forward its policies for growth and encouraging and improving infrastructure to allow our New Zealand economy to grow internally and externally. By making it easier to do business and easier to make investments in growth businesses, we will increase our ability to export quality products that represent value for money and provide businesses, and therefore all of us, with more opportunities and bigger returns.
Citizenship Ceremonies
Last week Auckland Council, with the help of local Councillor Daniel Newman and the local boards of Papakura and Franklin, ran three Citizenship ceremonies for almost 1000 people from all over Auckland, at the Due Drop Arena in Manukau.
One of my electorate office staff attended and as my representative, shook many hands and read part of the list of 36 countries that our newest citizens have come from. The high number reflects a lag during Covid and it is noted that there were many families with babies and small children taking the Oath or Affirmation of
Allegiance to our King Charles the Third and New Zealand. I congratulate all the new citizens and wish them good fortune and a great life in New Zealand.
Best wishes to all of you,
Judith
