Friend, President Trump issued an executive order claiming to designate English as the official language of the United States – a direct attack on immigrant communities and the millions of people in this country who don’t speak English fluently.

But here’s what Trump doesn’t want you to know: language access remains the law. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on national origin, which includes language. These protections apply to all federally funded programs and services, and no executive order can erase that.

Although Trump can’t overturn civil rights law with an executive order, this directive enables federal agencies to decide whether to provide information in languages other than English or not. This will make it even harder for the 25 million people in the U.S. who don’t speak English fluently to access information about essential services, like health care, education, and emergency assistance. It’s just another notch in Trump’s belt of cruelty – but we won’t let it go unchallenged.

Join us in demanding that the Attorney General comply with civil rights laws, enforce language access protections, and ensure that no one is denied critical information because of the language they speak.
