By MICHIGAN CAMPAIGN FINANCE NETWORK
LANSING, MI (March 14, 2025) — The Michigan Campaign Finance Network (MCFN) today announces that Neil Thanedar has been unanimously elected by the MCFN board to serve as its next Executive Director.
MCFN conducted atwo-month search ([link removed]) for its next Executive Director after Nick Pigeon, MCFN's last Executive Director, resigned to run for public office.
The Michigan Campaign Finance Network is a 28-year-old 501(c)3 nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to tracking and chronicling the influence of money in Michigan politics.
"I'm excited to take on this big responsibility to fight dark money in Michigan politics. MCFN has long been our state’s leading watchdog for campaign finance and government ethics and I'm fired up to continue and grow this legacy," said Neil Thanedar.
Neil brings his experience founding three startups, leading two nonprofits, and advising four political campaigns to MCFN, taking on the dual responsibilities of leading this organization and driving new investigations following the money in Michigan politics.
As part of MCFN’s commitment to independent journalism, Neil has agreed to recuse himself from any stories that may include his father, U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar. Any such reports will be written and reviewed by MCFN’s board, which includes an equal representation of former Democratic and Republican legislators plus nonpartisan former investigative journalists.
“MCFN’s critical role as watchdog over the influence of money and its sources on political decision makers demands partisan independence, critical thinking and courage. The Board is confident that Neil, like our directors before him, brings these qualities to this position and we look forward to the energy and integrity of his leadership,” said MCFN Board Chair, Alma Wheeler Smith.
At a time when data-driven political news is struggling, MCFN is a powerful force for good, fighting corruption in Michigan politics, tracking bills and proposals focused on government ethics and transparency, and holding our political leadership to account.
