Friend —
We will be having
our General Meeting this Saturday, June 6, 10am-noon via Zoom.
We are in full support of the
uprisings raging across the country that are telling the government
that black lives matter. It is time to ask ourselves: why are we
funding institutions that perpetuate such horrors, that treat black
life as expendable, that gun down and strangle unarmed young black men
with such regularity? Why do we always have money to pay killer cops,
to buy them tanks and body armor and military-grade weaponry — but no
money for schools, housing, healthcare, and the environment? Read our full statement here.
We support the organic daily
gatherings that have been taking place at 4 pm outside of the Detroit
Police headquarters at 1301 Third Street—today will be the 5th
straight day—and the many solidarity actions taking place throughout
the metro area.
Amid all this, we will be holding
our monthly general meeting, where we are scheduled to elect our 2020
Steering Committee. Candidate statements can be found
here.
All candidates running for Steering
Committee will have the opportunity to briefly address the general
membership. At the end of the meeting a ballot will go out via email
to every DSA member who registered on Zoom. In order to receive a ballot, you
must register for the meeting. You are not required to attend
in order to vote.
Voting will take place from
Saturday, June 6 at noon to Sunday, June 7 at 11:59 pm.
Members will make two votes: (1)
for two co-chairs, (2) for the 23-member Steering Committee
including the two co-chairs. Members will not vote for
officers, with the exception of the co-chair positions.
We will share the results of this
vote on Monday morning, June 8. The 23 elected members of the Steering
Committee plus 2 branch representatives will have a Special Elections
meeting the following weekend where the Internal Elections Committee
will facilitate the election of officers.
